The Montseny massif is situated 40 km NNE from Barcelona. The mountains cover about an area of 400 km2, about 80% of which is protected as Natural Park. Its highest altitude is 1707m asl. Climatically and biogeographycally Montseny lies in the northern boundary of the Mediterranean region. It is mostly forested, except at the upper reaches. Vegetation shifts altitudinally, with forests of pine, evergreen holm oak and beech, and heathlands and grasslands dominating in this order as altitude increases. The relief is steep and the lithology consists mostly of metamorphic phyllites, schists and granodiorites.

The Northern Adriatic Sea is the northernmost basin of the Mediterranean Sea. It is characterized by a shallow depth and by a dominant cyclonic circulation. The oceanographic and meteorological parameters show a marked seasonal and interannual variability. The remarkable river inputs (along the italian coast), the istro-dalmatian current (bringing high salinity and oligotrophic waters from the southern basin), and the notable sea-level range (relatively to the Mediterranean area), represent major forcings of the system. Of ecological relevance are also the urban and industrial inputs and the hydrodynamic exchange between the Northern Adriatic Sea and the lagoons, located along the italian coast.

Tsitsikamma National Park (TNP) Marine Protected Area (MPA) was established in 1964 and is a 100% no-take area. The MPA covers an area of 360km2 and is managed and protected by SANParks. The TNP-MPA is the oldest and one of the largest MPAs in South Africa. The MPA consists of large expanses of reef varying from low to high profile and reaching depths of approximately 85m. Long term monitoring began in 2006 with angling studies and has now progressed to the use of baited underwater remote stereo-video systems (stereo-BRUVs). Monitoring continues once annually.
