  • The dataset contains records of Fishes (Pisces) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal) in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A, to evaluate the impacts of dam construction in the fish communities and water quality of the river. This dataset refers to the year of 2012, during the construction process. Fishes were captured in 16 sampling stations by electrofishing (with restitution) in speing and autumn of 2012. A total of 2214 records of 11 species and one genus were obtained.

  • The dataset contains records of Phytobenthos collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal) in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in May 2012, during field visits to 23 sampling stations located along the lower Sabor valley up to 70 km upstream of the mouth, and in the Vilariça stream. A total of 9552 individuals belonging to 78 species and other taxonomic categories were found and identified.

  • The dataset contains Phytoplankton records of samples collected at Baixo Sabor reservoir during the first year of the Ecology Monitoring Program (PME) of Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Scheme, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Samples were collected in the deeper zone of the reservoir, at a fixed station 1300 m upstream of the dam, in 6 campaigns carried out between March and October of 2016. The targeted taxa were phytoplankton species, included as biological quality element for ecological quality in the framework of the EU’s Water Directive.

  • The dataset contains records of bats (Chiroptera) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor, which were collected in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between August 2008 and November 2014, during field visits to 97 known or presumed bat hibernation, reproduction and pre-dispersion (post-reproduction) roosts, within a 5-km radius buffer around the lower valley of River Sabor. The presence of individuals was recorded by direct observation, and all individuals were photographed whenever possible. The records include taxa identified at the species or genus level. In several occasions it was not possible to separate the individual species, so they were grouped in several “species complexes”, including either one or multiple genus. Due to the vulnerability of the roost locations, the precision of the geographic coordinates was degraded to 0.01, according to the recommendations of Chapman & Grafton (2008). The dataset with the original (undegraded) coordinates may be provided upon request by the resource contact from EDP, who will define the terms and conditions for its use.

  • The dataset contains records of Fishes (Pisces) collected in the River Sabor (NE Portugal) in 2012-2020, in the scope of a study aiming to understand the temporal dynamics of fish communities in relation to natural and anthropogenics drivers in a Mediterranean watershed. The study is part of research carried out at the Long Term Ecological Research Site (LTER) of Baixo Sabor (lter_eu_pt_002; https://deims.org/45722713-80e3-4387-a47b-82c97a6ef62b). The dataset includes data on fish communities obtained through electro-fishing (with restitution) at 74 sampling sites in 2012, and subsequently at 37 of these sites from 2013-2020. Until 2020, the data include a total of 27,514 records of 14 freshwater fish species. Part of these data has already been analised and published (see Ferreira et al., 2016; Mota-Ferreira et al., 2021). The dataset will be regularly updated with additional data from future sampling years.

  • The dataset contains records of the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) and other nocturnal birds of prey (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. A total of 32 acoustic sampling points was established along the lower Sabor river valley and in its main tributaries, which were visited each year in the peak of the species' breeding season (February) from 2010 to 2014. Data contains a total of 19 observation events of Bubo bubo (17) and Strix aluco (4).

  • The dataset contains records of bats (Chiroptera) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Specifically, this dataset includes results of surveys made in the scope of the monitoring of the project of Compensation Habitat of Vilariça valley for Chiroptera (MC1). Data were collected between April 2013 and August 2014, during field visits to 2 selected points located along the Vilariça stream, a tributary of the Sabor river, located near its mouth. The presence and identity of bat species were assessed by acoustic sampling of the echo-location calls emitted in fligth. The records include taxa identified at the species, genus, family or order level, as well as groups of species that share common calls but cannot be identified to any taxonomic level, and that were thus assigned to acoustic “species complexes”.

  • The dataset contains records of bats (Chiroptera) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor, in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Sampling was carried out between August 2008 and September 2014 in selected sampling points, in the framework of the regular monitoring of feeding habitats for Chiroptera. As part of the monitoring program of Compensatory Measures (MC 5.7), sampling was also carried out between July 2010 and September 2104 close to small weirs located in the tributaries of the River Sabor, above the area to be flooded by the reservoirs. The latter sampling included both extant weirs and locations where weirs were planned to be built in the future for improving feeding resources for bats. Overall, regular field sampling was performed at a total of 97 sampling points within a 5-km radius buffer around the limits of the area flooded by the reservoirs in the lower valley of River Sabor.

  • The dataset contains records of terrestrial, aquatic and riparian birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the monitoring programs of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A.. Specifically, the dataset relates to monitoring carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of measures implemented to mitigate the impacts of AHBS. In this case, the mitigation measures refer to "MC1 - Compensatory Habitat of Vilariça Stream". The dataset includes the results of bird surveys made in the Vilariça stream from January 2013 to September 2014. Sampling was performed in selected points distributed along the stream, up to 5 km upstream of the mouth. The presence and identity of bird species were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observations, with binoculars. The records include taxa identified at the species or genus levels.

  • The dataset contains records of nests of cliff-nesting species of high conservation priority, namely birds of prey and Black Stork (Ciconia ciconia) (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of nest surveys made in and around the area affected by the dam, from May 2010 to June 2014. Data consists of observations of all nests of the target species found in the study area, which were followed throughout the reproduction period (March-August) of each year. The records include the number of young produced by each couple in each year. The target species were Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Bonelli's Eagle (Aquila fasciata), Griffon (Gyps fulvus), Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopteris), Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) and Black Stork (Ciconia nigra). Additional species whose nests or potential nesting sites were also recorded, included Black Kite (Milvus migrans), Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo). Due to the vulnerability of nest site locations of these species, the precision of the geographic coordinates was degraded to 0.01, according to the recommendations of Chapman & Grafton (2008). The dataset with the original (undergraded) coordinates may be provided upon request by the resource contact from EDP, who will define the terms and conditions for its use.
